The Legend of John Adams

Our dearly departed former homeowner (may he rest in peace) continues to exercise his remodeling prowess from beyond the veil. After discovering (and correcting) the kitchen drainage vent that distributed sewer gas directly into the attic, Keith (our main-remodel-man) discovered that most of the electrical work in the kitchen was just a series of paper clips and staples, crimped together and attached to the breaker box with bubblegum.

Okay, perhaps it wasn't that bad, but it was pretty shoddy stuff. We're adding several new circuits for the project and the kitchen (and house overall) will be much happier for it. After all, AP has to be able to plug in her computer, phone, KitchenAid, Cuisinart, and **redacted**, while still leaving enough juice leftover for me to play Halo on the projector hooked up to the ceiling.

That last part may be an exaggeration.

  1. Scary stuff. Better to find it now than have the firemen show it to you later.

  2. Yeah, no kidding. The electrician is giving us an excellent price, so it's a no-brainer.

  3. Oh .. surprises? Intrigued!

Wasn't that kitchen added after a house fire? I mean, really, you'd think a fire would inspire dear old John Adams to make sure he had a up-to-code electrical system in the re-build. Crazy old man ... wonder what you'll find next?!

  4. Seriously. It was added after a fire, which is why there's so much strange drywall work (though Keith said they did a nice job on that front). Maybe it was a grease fire or something and they didn't think "oh, tangled nest of wires is bad"...
